London-Cyclists blocked roads in central London on Tuesday at the start of May Day anti-capitalist demonstrations(示威), cycling through the streets of the British capital lined with police on motorcycles.
Cyclists and others using unmotorised transport lifted their bicycles, skateboards and scooters under a large banner reading: “Overthrow capitalism and replace it with something nice”, as they began their protest(抗议) outside King’s Cross Station, one of the main stations to the north of the city.
Around a dozen wore face masks(面具) to avoid being recognized, but police acted to force them to remove the disguises.
“I’m wearing a mask in protest at the government and police trying to stop demonstrators wearing them. I’m protesting because I’m being exploited in my own country. I’m being exploited by being made to breathe polluted air every time I walk down the road,” one cyclist said.
By mid-morning police had made three arrests throughout the city. Some 6, 000 policemen are on the streets. In a large publicity campaign(活动) in the days before the demonstration, they said up to 10, 000 protestors were expected to take part in the demonstration, 1, 000 of whom were bent on violence(暴力).
