(Computer game, on-line chat)

Recent decades have witnessed increasingly negative attitude of students towards school education.

This essay aims to identify possible causes of this phenomenon and offer responsible solutions.

P: The biggest reason lies in increasingly severe pressure to compete among students.

It is almost a fact around the world that students have to compete with each other for limited educational resources, such as the opportunity to enter a notable university. This every desire stimulated them to try every means to gain the upper hand over others, which, unfortunately, renders them stressful and anxious. In the end, a sense of fear towards school education may be accumulated gradually, driving students out of their classrooms.

P: _Inappropriate pedagogic methods are found to be another contributor.___

A number of teachers with out-dated teaching methodology consider criticize or corporal punishment as an effective way to correct the misconduct of their students. They tend to require some so-called weak students to have rote learning and may even batter them if students fail to fulfill their assignment. However the status quo is that hardly does a student have affection for a teacher who is over strict with him. More noteworthy is the fact that students who are immature and inexperienced are very likely to hate certain courses due to the existence of some “inhumane” teachers. Gradually, it is their schools that they are reluctant to enter.

Overexposure to computer games or on-line chat may account for this phenomenon.

An experiment carried out by Japanese Central Educational Agency explored students’ attitudes towards learning in school in relation to computer games and on-line chat, and revealed that students who were indulged in modern technology were generally more unwilling to have regular schooling.

A number of fifty students aged from 10 to 15 were divided into two groups. In one group, students were offered opportunities to get access to the Internet to play computer games or to have chat on MSN.

In another group, the students were forbidden from modern technology.

Their overall performance was tested through a psychological test at the end of two weeks, whose result revealed that students kept away from the Internet showed continuous interest towards their study. In contrast, teenagers, when having access to the Internet, could hardly avoid themselves from being negatively affected, gradually losing their enthusiasm for learning.

All in all, appropriate/effective/proper actions/measures/steps/methods are supposed to be taken to end/correct/improve…

For one thing, it is imperative for the authorities to draw up/formulate and enact/put forward corresponding rules in an attempt to lighten the burden of students.

For another, a number of teachers are well advised to remove inappropriate teaching methods towards students who are slow in thinking or low in score since they just need time and patience to improve their overall performance.
