　　托福考试中的各种“火” (上)

　　托福和SAT考试中，有很多与“火”有关的词汇，这些单词在每次的文章阅读中，总是经常出现。

　　在今天的故事中，我们将会讲解“燃烧” (burning)，“点燃” (light) 和“熄灭” (put out) 这三个意群。

　　1. 火总是在“燃烧”的时候出现，而“燃烧”除了可以用 burning 表示，还可以说combustion. 这个单词重在描述物品的燃烧过程。

　　例如：The energy is released by combustion on the application of a match. 火柴点燃之后，在燃烧过程中会释放能量。

　　The two principal combustion products are water vapor and carbon dioxide. 两种主要的燃烧产物是水蒸气和二氧化碳。

　　combustion 的形容词形式是 combustible，它的意思是“可以燃烧的”，

　　例如：The ability of coal to release a combustible gas has long been known. 人们早已知道煤可以释放一种易燃气体。

　　2. 如果想让东西燃烧，就需要将它点燃。“点燃”既可以用 kindle 表示，也可以用 ignite 来描述。

　　例如：I came in and kindled a fire in the stove. 我进来把炉子点着了。

　　The bombs ignited a fire which destroyed some 60 houses. 炸弹引发的大火烧毁了大约60 栋房屋。

　　kindle和 ignite 除了表示“点燃”，还可以引申之后表示“激起某种感情”，这时，它与 rouse 和 inspire 是同义词。

　　例如，These poems have helped kindle the imagination of generations of children. 这些诗激发了一代又一代孩子的想象力。

　　所以后来，kindle 成为了亚马逊 (Amazon) 的一款电子书产品，希望通过这种方式，激发大家的学习热情。

　　3. 作为 kindle 和 ignite 的反义词，extinguish 表示“熄灭”，正因为有了extinguish，才会有extinct (灭绝) 的结局。

　　例如：They tried to extinguish the flames. 他们竭力要把火焰扑灭。

　　大家会把 extinguish 和 distinguish 混淆了吗? 前者 extinguish 表示“熄灭”，而后者 distinguish 表示“分辨”，同义词是discern.

　　除了extinguish，douse 也可以达到把火“熄灭”的结果，但是，douse 通常强调“用水浇灭”，

　　例如：The pumps were started and the crew began to douse the fire with water. 水泵开动了，消防队员们开始用水灭火。
