All through the long history of the Earth, waves have broken heavily against the land, and tides have pressed forward over the continents, moved back, and then returned. For no two days is the shoreline precisely the same. Not only do the tides advance and retreat in their eternal rhythms, but the level of the sea itself is never at rest. It rises or falls as the large masses of ice melt or grow, as the floor of the deep ocean basins shifts under its increasing load of sediments (沉积物), or as the Earth’s crust along the continental margins changes in adjustment to strain and tension. Today a little more land may be low to the sea, tomorrow a little less. Always the edge of the sea remains a changing boundary.

20. Read the following paragraph and write the TWO irrelevant sentences on the answer sheet.

My most frustrating job was cooking for a local fast food restaurant during my junior year in high school. There’s a coffee shop nearby. No matter how hard I tried, I never could cook what the menu said because the food company always delivered the wrong food or brought it late. I also was frustrated because I had trouble estimating how much food to cook. Many times we ran short of hamburgers or had to throw away pounds and pounds of French fries. Sometimes we ate the extra French fries, though, and we’d sit around, joking and having a good time. The worst thing, however, was the condition of my clothes after the meal was over. Even if I hadn’t spilled anything (and I usually had spilled some kind of sauce), my clothes smelled awful. I’d want to go home to change before going; anywhere else. No wonder, then, I thought cooking in a fast food restaurant was frustrating.
