  TASK 1

  1. Describe a person that you look up to as a role model. Explain how this person influenced your life. Include details and examples to support your response.

  2. Talk about one activity you will do in the near future. Explain why you want to do this activity.

  3. Describe one of your friends. Explain how you met and became friends.

  TASK 2

  1. Sixteen-year-olds are not mature enough to drive cars.

  2. Some students like studying new materials by taking detailed notes in the class, but some students like studying new materials by listening.

  3. Some students prefer to study for only one long time during a week. Other students prefer to study for several short periods of time during a week, which do you prefer?

  TASK 3

  1. A letter from a student suggesting to set up a lounge inside the Humanity building. So that students can have a place to study nearby, and also a place to get together and discuss questions.

  The Man in the conversation supports this proposal for 2 reasons.

  First, they can save some time going to the library (10 minutes to go there and 10 minutes back), and do something useful in half an hour. Second, they can have a place to gather together and discuss. For example, he had a class about Hamlet last time, it was very difficult. His classmates and he hadn’t finished their discussion about Hamlet when the class was over. So they wanted to find a place and keep on talking. But the outside was really cold.

  2. 【学生建议】:有封写给学校的信,建议add the kitchen in the student dormitory,理由:1、有足够的空间安置厨房设备;2、cooking skill is useful.【学生态度】 conversation部分:gg反对,理由:1、放厨房的空间原本可以用来watch TV, or taking social activities. 2、不认为cooking is a useful skill and 大部分学生很busy,而学习新的技巧,演习菜谱都会占用学习。

  3. 阅读:学校让新生参加study skill course,是一个从高中到大学的学习的transfer,因为大学学习跟高中不同。听力:男生同意,说high school 和college 之间的差别的确很大。他自己当年上大一就很迷惘,都是大课,而且也怎么复习考试、怎么做研究、怎么写paper 都不清楚,女生也同意。另外,这个课程是个small group course,学生可以多和老师interaction(ask questions & share ideas),而不是只坐在教室听老师说。

  TASK 4

  1.阅读:Alarm Calls。动物藉由发出alarm signals 来告知同伴附近有危险。Alarm calls 可以帮助同伴逃离危险,种族的生存率也就提高了。但有时也会藉行为驱赶同伴以降低食物上的竞争 (false alarm calls)。听力:教授举例猴子群体生活,一起找食物并共享,当有predators 出没的时候,先看到的猴子会screeching来告知同伴,听到讯号的同伴就会躲到树上去免于受害;有一次却发现猴群找到了food 准备要吃的时候,某一只突然screeching 吓跑其他同伴,但周遭并没发现predators 却看到screeching 的猴子待在原地把食物吃光!

  2. 阅读:Animal communication。重点关注:composition communication,指动物用超过2 种的技巧来传达他们的emotion(动物也会发signal,并可以把不同的signal 组合一起变不一样的意思)。听力:教授拿自家的狗举例子,在两种不同状况下的表现:

  (1)在周围很noisy 的情况下,尤其当当狗狗看到大的开车经过并伴随噪音,狗狗会有烦躁,愤怒,出现的动作是耳朵竖起来,会yell 等;(2)如果看到邻居的狗狗,也会出现耳朵竖起来等情况,但有摇尾巴,所以并不是烦躁愤怒,而是很开心,说明只是想跟它玩。

  3. 阅读:false signal。which means animals can mimic, imitate other animals signal,本来是动物向异性动物发出的mate 的讯号,但是有时候会被他们的天敌利用,给他们带来杀身之祸。听力:教授举例,moth,交配季节female 的会分泌一种化学物质散发scent 来吸引male,说female moth release certain chemical to signal male moth to mate,但是他们的天敌predator spider 也会detect the chemical, follow the male to trap the moth。

  TASK 5

  1.男生碰到的问题:要在的newspaper 上发文章,但是照片处理出现些问题,而且他的相机坏了。女生推荐两个:方法(1)不要放照片上去,但是男生觉得这样文章缺少吸引力;方法(2)还有一天的时间,和别人借相机重新去拍照片,不过怕来不及。

  2.周五有camping,女生的问题:没有tent。她朋友可以借一个给他,但太旧了,也有几个洞;男生建议她买个新的,以后也用得着,她怕自己不喜欢这项运动,以后也不一定用得着,会很浪费。问题:女生的问题和方案,你建议哪种,why。

  3.女同学受伤了,但她ride a bike to class,晚上还要把自行车搬回四楼宿舍。申请了一楼的宿舍,不过要一月以后才available。自己想了两方案:(1)把自行车放在露天的车棚,但是会挨雨淋,车是新的,不舍得;(2)把自行车放朋友那,不过他们选的课程不一样,朋友sleep late,所以不大方便。

  TASK 6

  1. 跟Marketing 有关,为了吸引消费者,business 必须说明他们的product and services is good。其中service 又是现代营销的一个重要的东西,business 想办法让消费者相信他们的service is high quality and can be trusted。教授举例她的一个朋友,是一个Painter 专门刷House 的,但一开始很少人知道她,因为她以前不做这个。之后她的朋友就让一些消费者写有关于她的作品的评论,吸引了很多人过来。另外一种策略是,放上before and after photo 作对比,一些Potential customers 也对作品产生兴趣。

  2. weeds 对庄稼的好处。好处一:防水土流失。coffee 长在steep slope 上,大雨一冲,就容易把有nutrient soil 冲掉,但是有了杂草就hold 一部分soil。好处二:防止害虫吃庄稼,coffee 的地儿有杂草时,昆虫会先吃杂草,不吃coffee。因为insects prefer weeds

  than coffee,所以可以使咖啡植物长得很好,免受虫害。

  3.非营利社会组织non-profit organization 的两种服务形式activity(Two service activities used by non-profit organization to improve a community)。一个间接的advocacy,通过媒体,利用电视广播、报纸等attract the public awareness,让人意识到问题。例如:某小区需要给孩子增加playground,非营利社会组织通过媒体宣传、广告,促使人们捐助金钱,兴建playground。一个是提供非营利社会组织能提供的direct support。同样是某小区需要给孩子增加playground 的例子,他们直接协助Build the playground and organize people and plant trees。
