NARRATOR: Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 26 to 30.

  [20 seconds]

Now listen and answer questions 26 to 30.

PHILIP: Yes, I have some questions concerning my long-term plan for this year. SUPERVISOR: Sure.

PHILIP: When should I start writing a first draft?

SUPERVISOR: Depends on the student. Does writing come easily to you?

  PHILIP: Not really...

SUPERVISOR: You'll want to start early then. But make sure you begin with an outline, and piece the rest in slowly. But you need to avoid the problem of researching with no end in sight.

PHILIP: Right. I'll pick a date to and try and stick to it.

  SUPERVISOR: Good idea.

PHILIP: Okay, how about the first or second week of August then? I'll aim to complete my research by August, or maybe September...

SUPERVISOR: Early August is best. You can do some minor referencing after that, but

don't keep adding new information. Then you have one month of solid writing to complete a first draft. When do you want that? PHILIP:

SUPERVISOR: Well, I'm going overseas from September 13 until early October. If you th

want me to read it over before the oral presentation, then leave a hard

in my pigeon hole which I’ll collect before the 10th of September.

Okay. Now, about the oral presentation in October … Do I really have to copy PHILIP:

  speak for 30 minutes?

SUPERVISOR: No. The time allotted to you will be about half an hour, but it is not a formal presentation.

PHILIP: So I won't be speaking for the whole time?

SUPERVISOR: No, it usually takes the form of a casual discussion. Students will ask questions, I will offer advice; we will discuss any problems...

  PHILIP: Sounds fairly low key.

SUPERVISOR: Yes, but the more prepared you are, the more you will get out of it. PHILIP: Great. Now my final question is about the November deadline for the thesis.

SUPERVISOR: Remember – there won’t be any time extension, so aim to wind things up with at least a week to spare.

Okay. And the formal bounded copy is handed in on the 30th? PHILIP:

  SUPERVISOR: That's right. Anything else?

PHILIP: No, that's all. Thanks for seeing me!

  SUPERVISOR: No problem. Bye.

NARRATOR: That is the end of section 3. You now have half a minute to check your answers.
