  D

In my life I've been told that teamwork is golden. There is no “i” in “team”.And for many years it is true.Living alone gets a bad rap (受到责备) in our society. But I've found that living alone can be a positive experience.

I'm not the first person to notice the appeal of being our own roommate—31 million people are living alone in the U.S.,making up 28 percent of the total population, according to a survey. In NYC,the number jumps to 1 in 2.Comparing that number to the 9 percent of people who lived alone in 1950,we know we have a trend on our hands.

In my opinion, many people are afraid of being totally alone. But I've learned to really enjoy my own company. When I first started living alone,I found that I could go anywhere without using my voice.Sometimes I would stop at a grocery store and buy something I didn't need just to test that I could say “thank you” to the cashier. But then I discovered something far easier—I started talking to myself.

Living__alone__isn't__the__same__thing__as__living__lonely.When I'm feeling a need for communication,I reach out for it.Or I can pick up the phone to call my family or those roommates. When the time is right,I hope to live with a partner and even raise children. In the meantime,it's just me and me.

On Thanksgiving,Scott Macaulay is preparing a full turkey dinner for a whole bunch of people he's never met.His 70 or so guests—elderly people,low-income people,at-risk teens, and others—have one detail in common:__36__

  “What I do isn't a big deal,really,”the 52-year-old said.“I just cook some food.”

Macaulay's unconventional Thanksgiving tradition began in 1985,right around the time his parents decided to get divorced. The holidays got messy that year, and Macaulay, who was 24 at the time, sensed he'd be spending Thanksgiving alone.__37__

“Thanksgiving isn't about fireworks or band concerts,” he said.“ __38__ It's not fun to do that by yourself.”

Macaulay placed an ad in his local paper with a simple message: If people thought they might be alone on Thanksgiving, they could give Macaulay a call.

__39__It was nice.So he placed another ad the following year, and the year after that.

In recent years,Macaulay has been hosting his Thanksgiving dinners at local churches with lots of space. He still buys and prepares all the food himself and spends about 40 hours putting the whole affair together.__40__He said it's important to him that he not seek out volunteers or donations because “that's not what this is about.”

  37.A [结合全文内容及本空前的he'd be spending Thanksgiving alone不难推测,Macaulay认为独自过感恩节“感觉很糟糕”。]

39.D [根据本空后的It was nice和another ad the following year...可知,“第一年有几个人现身Macaulay的宴会”,因此他随后年年坚持做这件事。]

40.E [根据本空前的He still buys and prepares all the food himself and spends about 40 hours putting the whole affair together可知,为了感恩节的宴请,Macaulay劳心劳力,故E项“在感恩节那天,他从凌晨五点忙到晚上八点”符合此处语境。]
