　　第一次鸦片战争(1840年-1842年)，英国因东印度公司在中国走私鸦片被销毁而对中国发动的一场战争，也是中国近代史的开端。战争的导火线是英国商人在中国广东海域走私鸦片二十多年，被林则徐于1839年在广东强行销烟。战争以中国失败并签署了《南京条约》这一近代中国的第一个不平等条约告终。鸦片战争使中国开始沦为半殖民地半封建社会，丧失独立自主的地位，加快了自然经济的解体。

　　Opium War

　　The First Opium War (1840-1842) was a war against China launched by Britain following the destruction of the smuggled opium of the Eastern Indian Company, and was the start of the history of modern China. The war was triggered in Guangdong in 1839 when Lin Zexu forcibly destroyed the opium that British businessmen had beensmuggling into Guangdong by sea for over 20 years. The war ended with China’s defeat and the signing of the Treaty of Nanjing, the first unequal treaty in the history of modern China. The Opium War began to plunge China in to a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, and deprived China of independence and also expedited the collapse of the homegrown economy.
