　　Peking opera, the most popular and most influencial opera in China, is regarded as China's “national opera” with a history of about 200 years. Originally a local drama, it was very popular with the audience and gradually spread all over China, slowly evolving into a national drama. Its actors and actresses mainly use four forms of performing methods on stage, namely, chang (singing), nian (recitation), zuo (facial and body acting), and da (martial arts). In Peking opera, male roles are called sheng, female roles are dan, and clown roles are chou. Each role is characterized by drawings of different facial make-up designs. In this way, the audience can easily tell what characters the actors represent. Today, Peking opera has become an important means of introducing and transmitting traditional Chinese culture.
