　　“禅”意为“在祖宗面前大力推荐”，“让”指“让出首领之位”。禅让制度是我国原始社会部落联盟民主推选首领的制度，据说当部落联盟首领尧年老时，召集了部落联盟会议，推举有才德的舜为继承人。禅让是在位君主自愿进行的，是为了让更贤能的人统治国家。

　　The system of abdicating and handing over the crown to another person was used for the democratic election of the leaders of the tribal alliance in the primitive society. It is said that when the leader of the tribal alliance Yao became aged, he convened the meeting of the tribal alliance to recommend and choose the talented and virtuous Shun as his successor. This system was implemented voluntarily by the incumbent monarchs, in order to provide opportunities for more talented and virtuous persons to govern the country.
