　　南水北调工程是指把长江流域水资源自其上游、中游、下游，结合中国疆土地域特点，分东、中、西三线抽调部分送至华北与淮海平原和西北地区水资源短缺地区。主要解决我国北方地区，尤其是黄淮海流域的水资源短缺问题，规划区人口4.38亿人。工程方案构想于1954年时任国家主席毛泽东视察黄河时提出。

　　South to North Water Diversion Project

　　The South to North Water Diversion Project refers to diversion of the water resources of the Yangtze River basin from its upper, middle and lower reaches to North China, Huaihai Plain and northwestern areas which are short in water resources in the east, middle and west lines according to the regional features of China’s territory. It is mainly targeted at addressing water shortage in northern China especially the Yellow River basin, and will benefit a population of 0.438 billion. The project was proposed by President Mao Zedong during his inspection of the Yellow River in 1954.
