This autonomous prefecture belongs to the west region of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, which is inhabited by the Yi, Miao, Dai, Han, and another 21 ethnic groups. The population of the Yi ethnic group accounts for 25.17% of the total population living in this autonomous prefecture. On April 15 of 1958, the autonomous prefecture of the Yi ethnic group was established in Chuxiong city, with the government of this autonomous prefecture headquartered there.
