　　During the Spring Festival, the elderly will by tradition give money in red packets to children. The red packet money is also called "yasuiqian", meaning "money warding off evil spirits". It is said that in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the elderly would thread coins with a red string before sending them to children. Since the early 20th century, the threaded coins have transformed to red packet money. Now the red packet generally refers to money in a red envelope, or monetary gifts in celebrations. The money may also be a bonus or a bribe.
