Autumnhas come to banana leaves, blown now half to shreds;
Tatteredand torn, the ponds and pools,
Whererain beats down and breaks off scattered lotus.
Aroundthe steps the cries of crickets die away in fragrant grass;
Myaching heart is knotted as hard as a new wisteria bud.
Iturn back toward the southwest and look at the evening moon;
Asolitary goose comes flying over:
Moaningand sobbing, the sound of frontier flutes.
Oneafter another, the old pleasures, nowhere to be enjoyed;
Whenwill these towering mountains cease to keep us far apart?
